Re: Help! WU Downloads failing

Once more ZA showing up as a usual suspect. It's incomprehensible that if it's blocking, that there is no log or alert like information available to tell what on earth it's doing.

Your case done, now it's on to find out what is the issue with asia's... maybe what you report points the way.

Re: Help! WU Downloads failing

On the computer that you are having troubles with, can you download this file via your browser:

https://grid.worldcommunitygrid.org/boinc/download/c5/cep2.qcaux_v2.zip

And time how long it takes?
I'm not presently having any problems. Still don't know what caused the problems or who fixed them - did the techs do anything? If not then I would aim my ire at the ISP.
The test file downloaded in 1min 40sec (about 800Kb/s) - OK but nothing special for a 20Meg download connection. The problem was observed on 2 systems and one is very new (without AV/specialised firewall, yet).

Re: Help! WU Downloads failing

@SekeRob

Thanks for the help and suggestions, although I wasn't aware that ZA was a 'usual suspect'. Had I known, I would have replaced it earlier in my trials and tribulations.

What actually worries me more than the fact that it offered no clues, was the fact that it allowed the connection intermittently. If the activity was genuinely rogue malware, then ZA would be permitting lots of it to go through without too much trouble.

If this kind of symptom is common for ZA, has anybody bothered to talk to Checkpoint about it?

Incidentally, I am still not getting the kind of throughput in either direction that my broadband pipe can support, although it is vastly improved since I replaced ZA.

Does it matter whether the agent is 32-bit or 64-bit on a 64-bit OS? The WCG download page only seems to offer the 32-bit version while you have to manually choose the 64-bit version from the Berkeley University website.

Re: Help! WU Downloads failing

ZA uses behavior and pattern based analysis to prevent unauthorized downloads. I guess you would have had to set exceptions to allow the http/https/zip files from WCG through the firewall. I think you can set ZA to either report or not report. Most people set to not report because it constantly blocks and pop-ups appear all the time, very annoying.

Virgin upstream throttling angers gamers

Virgin Media has admitted it's restricting P2P uploads during peak times in a trial that the company plans to extend nationwide if it proves successful.

Can the WCG confirm if this throttling would impede download of WCG files?

Re: Help! WU Downloads failing

skgiven - from what I read in that article, it sounds like they already do download throttling. I found this which seems to outline their policies: http://www.virginmedia.com/myvirginmedia/fast...ffic_management_table.php

Based on the values in that table, it would very much depend on what else the user is doing and what package they have. If someone thinks that they are being impacted by this, then I would suggest that they increase their cache size and set the time of day restrictions on the agent to prevent upload/download during those times. That should keep them out of the 'fair use' limits or at least prevent uploads/downloads from us contributing to that.

You could also submit a request to Virgin Media that they whitelist us since it appears that they have done that for various other gaming sites.

Re: Help! WU Downloads failing

Ok this seems similar to issues i was having running 7 pro enterprise 180 day eval.

I ended up turfing that install and going back to ultimate.

Whilst boinc wasn't having major sagas it was easilly upset in 7 pro but i noticed other software was not behaving well at all beit in comatability modes or running xp mode nothing made any difference.

It's a long stretch but so far i suspect it's pro version acting more like a home version i will purchase one online and test my theory as i can't justify paying extra for ultimate in any case.

Beta's ect yeh you expect trouble but i have a nasty feeling it's more than that.

Pro is turning into it's street name sake.

Re: Help! WU Downloads failing

Why do i get the feeling i double posted on this ok those curious with findings on win 7 pro i will re install soon and try again first time cheating with wrong media if need be second time will be the real maccoy even though both will be build 7600 well 7601 i think with SP1 more dribble on my website but no something is a miss with pro which ultimate doesn't seem to suffer not sure about any others. Enterprise trial was what i was using last time but thats basicly pro edition with less clutter next to no drivers as they prefer to leave that upto admin as to whats to be installed apart from stock OS ? I'm going to have a wiki moment and say (citation needed) But doing a search on various engines all cold otherwise i could have sustained serious burns?? Reveals 7 pro is mmm problem prone thats as polite as i can be because i wasn't when the stupid BSOD of a thing RRRRr kill any way bye lol.
