Hi all,
I wonder if anyone might have a clue why this message should appear You can't open the application wcg_hcc1_img_6.40_powerpc-apple-darwin because PowerPC applications are no longer supported. I have an iMac i7 with OS 10.73 All working well on both single projects and World Grid until this last 24 hours. Apologies if this is the wrong part of the forum for this question. Jon H |

Could be, the server upgrade mangled a few things such as device identification. If you have no work of WCG currently, do a Project reset in BOINC Manager, project tab. That would hopedfullyl re-identify the machine and download a fresh set of science applications of the sciences you've selected.
And, PowerPC support is running on it's last leg, but your I7 is most surely an Intel CPU. --//-- |

If someone else experiences this problem, can you please post the following things:
1) The first 20-30 messages in the client 2) The messages that show the request to the server and the files downloaded also if you could send the file "sched_request_www.worldcommunitygrid.org" to support@worldcommunitygrid.org and ask that it be sent to Kevin. That would be very helpful. You can find it in the C:\ProgramData\BOINC if you are using windows 7. |

Ok - here is what is happening. We are debating what to do about it.
The client is sending a request with the following: <platform_name>x86_64-apple-darwin</platform_name> <alt_platform> <name>i686-apple-darwin</name> </alt_platform> <alt_platform> <name>powerpc-apple-darwin</name> </alt_platform> What this tells the server is that the preferred application version for this client is 64 bit mac but that it also supports 32 bit mac and powerpc mac. The problem is that this isn't true in your case. I'm going to discuss with Charlie at Berkeley (he maintains the mac client code) and get his input. This problem has probably existed for awhile. However, the old server code prioritized the platforms based on primary platform and then each alt platforms in order. The new server code attempts to determine which supported platform runs most efficiently and apparently issued a lot of workunits with the powerpc application. There is a parameter that reverts this logic back to the old way and have enabled that parameter while we wait. In all likelyhood the fix will probably be to have the server discard any client who claims they support powerpc-apple-darwin as an alt platform. thanks for sending the information to the support inbox - it help clear up this issue. |

Is editing "sched_request_www.worldcommunitygrid.org" a temp most inelegant answer? The lines in my windows copy are:
<platform_name>windows_x86_64</platform_name> <alt_platform> <name>windows_intelx86</name> </alt_platform> i.e. get 64 bits or 32 bits [and test which of the 2 is fastest on the 64 bit host]. Suppose that if the /alt were removed I'd only get C4CW. --//-- |

The sched_request file is recreated on every scheduler request. As a result editing it will not accomplish the goal.
I've discussed with Berkeley and the best course of action will be to ignore powerpc-apple-darwin if included as an alt platform. That means that if a request comes in like: <platform_name>x86_64-apple-darwin</platform_name> <alt_platform> <name>i686-apple-darwin</name> </alt_platform> <alt_platform> <name>powerpc-apple-darwin</name> </alt_platform> We will treat it as if it requested: <platform_name>x86_64-apple-darwin</platform_name> <alt_platform> <name>i686-apple-darwin</name> </alt_platform> |
