Africa Rainfall Project - Monthly Mini-Updates

We just wrapped up our first official, non-launch related, monthly call with the research team.

1. We discussed the project's long-term storage needs, which are quite large given the amount of data and the size of the work units. We're exploring different options and will let everyone know once we have a solution.
2. Once there's a storage solution, we will be able to increase the number of work units sent out to volunteers. One of the tech team will make an announcement when we're able to do this.

Early Stats
Total Runtime: ~ 203 years
Workunits Completed: ~ 62,988
Average Runtime per Workunit: ~ 28 hours

Even more mini than the Research introduction @

https://www.worldcommunitygrid.org/research/arp1/overview.do

How about a Project Detail tab like all other projects have? The Canadian papers were more informative on the technical details. Surely that's not the idea, us actual contributing volunteers having the scour Google.

TIA

Re: Africa Rainfall Project - Monthly Mini-Updates

I'm curious about when the other two projects will begin, whatever they were.

Re: Africa Rainfall Project - Monthly Mini-Updates

Since this was offered to the research team:

For scientists who work on environmental research initiatives with very large data sets, IBM Cloud Object Storage provides a scalable platform to store and analyze the results of virtual experiments on World Community Grid and conduct further investigations.

I'm assuming there was a limit to the generosity. Wasn't it known and discussed with the research team prior to launch that their storage requirements were beyond the limit provided by IBM. It should have been known from the alpha and beta testing. So why is there a scramble to deal with the storage requirements almost 2 months after launch?

Re: Africa Rainfall Project - Monthly Mini-Updates

Storage...that sounds like a very trivial bottleneck. i hope it gets improved upon.

They may not be trivial

Re: Africa Rainfall Project - Monthly Mini-Updates

Can the research team please provide more details on how big the grid squares are? E.g. 9 km x 9 km, 3x3, 1x1, etc.

It is hard to tell what's going on with Klein bottles.
